Frequently asked questions
Do I definitely need 35 years for a full State Pension?
Not always. Thirty-five years is the usual figure for someone whose National Insurance record began after April 2016. Earlier records and contracting out can produce a different result.
Can I buy missing qualifying years?
You may be able to pay voluntary National Insurance contributions, subject to deadlines and eligibility. Check first that the payment would increase your State Pension.
Does the State Pension start automatically?
No. You normally receive an invitation and must claim it; you can also defer your claim.
